This is one of three community welcome signs created by James Simon. When he did the sign for Braddock he worked with the Braddock Youth Organization. Likewise, when he created this sign for Uptown, he worked with the Hill District Youth to assemble the mosaic.

Mr Simon’s contribution to Uptown doesn't end here. The welcome sign is only one small part of his efforts to improve this community as well as others around the city. A few blocks from the welcome sign, you'll find a small outdoor art gallery of sorts on Gist St. Although the art was done by several different artists, the project was done by James Simon. The Art on Gist St project has included more than paintings and sculptures in the past. It also included a monthly literary reading series, and poetry readings that brought local residents and many from outside the community together in yet another way. He was also a founding board member of Uptown Partners of Pittsburgh, working to improve every aspect of this neighborhood. If that wasn't enough, Mr Simon worked to obtain and plant street trees for the Uptown neighborhood.
