James Simon created this mosaic welcome sign for the town of Braddock with some help from the Braddock Youth Project (BYP). This is not the only project that he’s done with these kids. Braddock’s mayor (John Fetterman), a strong advocate for public art in his town, has been quoted as saying that James Simon is approachable, talented, down to earth and works well with the young people. He should know. Mr Simon has done at least three art projects in Braddock with the BYP and they're all beautiful.

Entering Braddock by the Rankin Bridge, this sign is one of the first things you see. It's fun, colorful, welcoming, and a great introduction to a community with lots of public art (and no doubt more on the way). The sculpture of a dog on top of the sign is a nice touch! Who wouldn’t feel welcome with a friendly dog greeting them at the front door?

This is one of three welcome signs that Mr Simon has created so far for Pittsburgh neighborhoods. His Uptown welcome sign greets people at the end of the Birmingham Bridge on Fifth Ave. Unfortunately the sign he created for Troy Hill hasn't been installed yet.
