On the artist’s website they explained that the design for this mural was inspired by ideas from the community and the history of the area as well as the art of Romare Bearden, who lived on Penn Avenue with his grandparents in the late 1920s.

Much like Welcome to the Strip, this mural shows a composite of what you see in the Strip District, but on a larger scale. Instead of the snippets you find in the other mural, the artists here seem to have bent reality to try to give you a view of everything. They pull the entire area into a compressed and distorted view where the main shopping street curves around. A bit of the city skyline peeks above in the background, just as it does when you’re walking through the area.

The multiple colors and layers in the sky is one of the best representations I’ve seen for Pittsburgh’s fast changing weather, and the metal bird sculptures give a bit of a three dimensional feel to it.
