Even though this mural is directly across the road from the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) (Steel Valley Trail section) as it passes through Duquesne, you really can’t see it from the trail because of the concrete wall between the trail and the railroad tracks. At the intersection where the trail crosses Grant Ave, you can catch a glimpse of it, but you need to cross S. Duquesne Blvd there and ride a block south to the Park N Ride lot to really look at it.

Duquesne was another of the Pittsburgh area riverfront communities that once thrived and then collapsed due to the rise and fall of the steel industry. A familiar story around here. The mural showcases some images of the Old Duquesne but also weaves in everyday things that are still a part of the community. It includes several things that aren’t there anymore. Things they want to remember like the old trolley and a doughboy statue that was melted down for the war effort during WWII.

The mural was done as part of the National City Bank Martin Luther King Jr. Community Mural Project. A press release said it was supposed to feature portraits of people, events and structures that have shaped our region’s history, but they did not identify any specific people.
