Originally, this location was selected as the spot for a mural to commemorate the MLK Foundation’s 10th anniversary. It was announced that the design would be a mixed media mural with a young woman in a t–shirt that said the future is me
. When Pittsburgh hosted the One Young World
summit in 2012, the plan changed and a mural to commemorate that event went up here instead.
According to a story on ImaginePittsburghNow.com, Kyle Holbrook (founder of MLK project) said the mural celebrates youth leadership. In a video on that website he farther explains that the mural is meant to leave a reminder that the One Young World summit was here. It’s hung on an angle because it represents a page in history and contains snapshots for reminders of the event.
